HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)

What is HDMI?
HDMI is the standard for the HD consumer electronics market. It is an all digital audio and video cable used for High-Definition TVs and HD equipment. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It also can support ATSC HDTV standards and 8-Channel, 192 kHz, uncompressed digital audio.

What resolutions does HDMI support?
HDMI supports all current HD video formats (720p, 1080i, and 1080p). It also has the ability to support enhanced definition formats such as 480p and Standard Definition formats (NTSC and PAL).

What does AWG mean?
AWG stands for "American Wire Gauge" and it indicates the thickness of the wire. The smaller the AWG, the thicker the cable is. If you need to run a cable over a long distance, it is recommended to use a thicker cable to provide less resistance along the signal path.

What is a ferrite core?
A ferrite core is used to protect other equipment from radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Does HDMI support long cable lengths?
Yes, HDMI technology allows cables to be designed at long lengths with standard copper construction. HDMI specifies the required performance of a cable but does not specify a maximum cable length.

Are these HDMI cables as good as the name brand cables sold in retail stores?

The HDMI Mini cable is designed to connect High Definition portable devices such as a camcorder or digital camera to HDTVs.

DVI (Digital Visual Interface)

Like HDMI, DVI transmits data digitally for a crystal clear video signal. However, it is video only, audio is not supported with DVI. Before HDMI, it was DVI that was being used for HDTV, EDTV, and other high end displays. Now DVI is most commonly used with computers and LCD monitors.

What's the difference between DVI and HDMI?
There is no image quality difference between DVI and HDMI. Both of them use the same encoding process. The only difference between these two cables is that HDMI carries audio and video and has a different connector. That’s why a DVI source can be carried to an HDMI monitor, or vice versa with only a HDMI to DVI cable.

Does a DVI to HDMI cable provide audio?
No, a separate audio cable is needed when connecting a DVI device to an HDMI source with a DVI to HDMI cable.

What does "Dual Link" mean?
Dual link DVI cables are able to carry more data to high resolution displays and provide an increase of speed and signal quality. For example, a DVI single link 60-Hz LCD can display a resolution of 1920 x 1200, while a DVI dual link can display a resolution of 2560 x 1600.

What's the difference between DVI-D, DVI-A, and DVI-I?

  • DVI-D cables are used for a direct connection between video cards and LCD monitors. Since all video cards transmit a digital signal, there is no analog conversion when using a DVI-D cable. An HDMI to DVI cable can be used to connect video cards from your computer to an HDTV with HDMI support.
  • DVI-A cables are used to transmit a DVI signal to an analog display, such as a CRT monitor or an old LCD monitor. DVI-A carries the same signal as VGA, so there is some quality loss when using DVI-A cables.
  • DVI-I cables can transmit both digital-to-digital signals, and analog-to-analog.

Component Video

Component video is the standard for analog high definition video. Component video connectors have 3 coaxial jacks consisting of one red, green, and blue. A standard 3-RCA Component video cable does not include audio. However, there are 5-RCA component video cables that include 2-RCA audio cables in the form of red and white connectors. The component video interface is marked with either Y Cr Cb or Y Pr Pb . Y/Cb/Cr is used for digital applications while Y/Pb/Pr is used for analog applications. The terms YUV, Y/Pb/Pr and Y/Cb/Cr are sometimes used interchangeably which is not correct.

VGA (Video Graphics Array) and SVGA (Super Video Graphics Array)

VGA is the most widely used analog connection between PCs and monitors. It produces high resolution video creating a very sharp detailed image. All PC video cards support VGA. Analog CRT monitors use VGA and LCD monitors use both VGA and DVI .

VGA connections are also commonly referred to as HD15, and DB15.

What is the difference between VGA and SVGA cables?
VGA cables are standard gauge cables used for shorter distances. SVGA cables can produce higher resolutions and longer cable runs since the cable is thicker. Both cables use the same connector (HD-15) so they can be used interchangeably.

Is VGA compatible with DVI?
Since VGA is an analog signal, it is only compatible with DVI-A and DVI-I. VGA is not compatible with DVI-D since DVI-D is a digital only signal.

Is VGA compatible with HDMI?
VGA is not compatible with HDMI. Since HDMI is digital only, it is not possible to convert a VGA signal to an HDMI signal.

Since VGA and Component video are both analog signals, are these two compatible?
No, VGA uses RGBHV video format while component video uses Y, Pr, Pb.

Composite Video

Composite video is the most common analog video connection for televisions. Composite is the yellow jack that provides the video signal from VHS, DVD, or game consoles. The red and white RCA cables usually found next to the yellow jack, are used for the audio signal.

S-Video (mini-DIN)

S-video is a standard found on most video equipment today. It is considered a step up in image quality when compared to composite video.

S-video cables are for video only. However, they sometimes come with 2 RCA audio cables.

What is S/PDIF?

S/PDIF stands for Sony/Philips Digital Interface. SPDIF is a standard digital audio interface that is most commonly used to connect the output of a DVD player to Digital audio equipment such as a home theater receiver that supports Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound. The two common types of SPDIF connectors are the Digital Coaxial audio cable and the TosLink optical audio cable. Both cables transmit the same exact information.

Digital Coaxial Audio Cables

Digital Coaxial cables are used to transmit a clean digital audio signal. They use a standard 75ohm coax with RCA connectors. Digital coaxial cables are ideal for subwoofer, S/PDIF, and digital coaxial connections. They can also be used in place of a composite video cable.

What's the difference between RG59/U and RG6/U?
RG59 uses a 22AWG cable, while RG6 uses an 18AWG cable. That means that the RG6 cable is thicker since it is a lower AWG. Thicker cables are ideal for long cable runs.

Digital Optical TosLink Cables

TosLink Optical audio cables transmit light from one end to the other instead of electrically. Because of this, there is virtually no interference. The connector type on optical cables is a square plug and it is mostly used with home theater audio receivers, DVD players, CD players, and more.

A Toslink Mini adapter can be used with a regular Toslink cable to connect a standard sized component to a portable device's mini optical input.

RCA Audio Cables

RCA audio cables are the most common cables for audio equipment. They may come with 2 RCA cables with red and white colored connections for the left and right channels, or a single black cable.

Are the 2-RCA cables rated for in-wall use?
No, both our premium and generic 2-RCA cables are not rated for in-wall use. We recommend using two of our premium RG6 digital coaxial single RCA cables instead. This is a thicker cable that will significantly reduce interference.

Network Cables

Cat5E (Category 5 Enhanced)

The Cat5E cable is the one currently plugged into your router or computer's networking port. This cable is composed of four pairs of 24-guage twisted copper pairs terminating into an RJ-45 jack. It is designed to transmit data at speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second.

Cat 6 (Category 6)

Like Cat5e, Cat 6 is also used to wire networks. Both cables use the same RJ45 connector.

What is the difference between Cat 5e and Cat 6?
The only difference between these two cables is Cat 6 has twice the bandwidth rating for next-gen standards.

Computer Cables


FireWire (IEEE-1394 connection, iLink)

Because of its very fast transmission speeds, FireWire is most commonly used with audio and video equipment such as camcorders, digital cameras, or other portable devices. The latest version of FireWire can transmit data at speeds of up to 800Mbps.

There are different types of FireWire connections: 4Pin, 6Pin and 9Pin. You'll have to check your device to see which one it supports.

What is the difference between 4pin, 6pin, and 9pin FireWire connections?
Each of these types of FireWire connectors has different sizes and configurations.

  • 4-pin is mostly found on camcorders or laptops. It transfers data at up to 400Mbps. 
  • 6-pin is found on desktops, laptops, external drives, etc. Transmits data at up to 400Mbps. 
  • 9-pin is found on newer high speed devices and computers. It can transmit data at up to 800Mbps. This connector is backward compatible with the 6-pin and 9-pin connectors, but data transfer would be limited to 400Mbps.

Can a FireWire connection be converted to USB?
No, while FireWire and USB are very similar, they use different formats to transfer data. If your computer doesn't have a FireWire port, you can get a PCI FireWire card.


USB cables are the most common connection used for connecting devices to computers. It plugs everything from your, iPods, digital cameras, or many other devices into your computer.

USB 2.0, which is pretty much a standard, can transfer data at 480Mbps. It also adds battery charging capabilities.


The USB type B plug is mainly used for connecting peripherals such as a printer or scanner to your computer.

Mini USB

Mini USB is a small USB connector used for connecting devices such as a digital camera or a phone to your computer.

Micro USB

Micro USB is even smaller than the Mini USB connector. This cable is most common with smaller cell phones.

SATA (Serial ATA)

SATA cables are used to transfer data from hard drives or optical drives inside your computer. These cables can transfer data at up to 150Mbps.
